10% suits lawns with beds, curves and edges. A plain open rectangle can use 5%.

For an L-shaped or irregular lawn, measure it as two rectangles and use the second area boxes. Rolls are the standard 2 ร— 5 ft size; pallets are worked out at 500 sq ft coverage.

Quick answers

How many rolls of sod do I need for a 200 sq ft lawn?

A standard roll of sod is 2 ร— 5 ft and covers 10 sq ft. This calculator first adds 10% for cutting around edges and curves (200 sq ft becomes 220 sq ft), then divides by 10 โ€” so a 20 ร— 10 ft lawn needs 22 rolls.

How many pallets of sod do I need?

A pallet covers 500 sq ft in this calculator. The 220 sq ft order for a 20 ร— 10 ft lawn fits on 1 pallet; a 1,000 sq ft lawn with 10% waste needs 1,100 sq ft of sod, which is 110 rolls or 3 pallets rounded up.

How much extra sod should I order?

This calculator adds 10% by default for cuts, curves and the odd damaged roll โ€” the figure most sod suppliers recommend for a lawn with beds and edges. For a plain rectangle with no obstacles, 5% is usually enough; you can change the percentage in the calculator.

Are rolls or pallets cheaper?

At the example prices on this page, the 20 ร— 10 ft lawn costs $176.00 in rolls or $350.00 for a full pallet, so rolls win for small lawns. Pallets usually work out cheaper per square foot on big lawns โ€” the calculator prices both so you can compare with your supplier's pallet coverage and prices.
