Gravel Calculator

This gravel calculator turns an area and depth into tons for a bulk delivery, cubic yards, or the number of bags โ€” with costs. No sign-up. The working is shown under every number.

Quick example: a 10 ร— 10 ft area at 3 in deep needs 1.5 tons of gravel ($67.50 in bulk) or 55 bags ($275.00) at the example prices.

Results include 10% extra because gravel compacts down and spreads โ€” the load that arrives always covers a little less than the maths says.

The two lines are alternatives โ€” buy one or the other, not both. One cubic yard of gravel weighs about 1.4 tons (2,800 lb).

Quick answers

How many tons of gravel do I need for a 10 ร— 10 ft area?

At 3 in deep, this calculator works out 1.5 tons for a 10 ร— 10 ft area, including 10% extra because gravel compacts down and spreads. At the example bulk price of $45 per ton, that is $67.50.

How many bags of gravel do I need for a 10 ร— 10 ft area?

The same 10 ร— 10 ft area at 3 in deep takes 55 bags of 0.5 cu ft gravel, at $275.00 at the example bag price of $5. The calculator lists bulk tons and bags as alternatives โ€” buy one or the other, not both.

How much area does one ton of gravel cover?

In this calculator's results, 1.0 ton covers a 10 ร— 10 ft area at 2 in deep, including the 10% extra for compaction. The calculator converts volume to weight at 1.4 tons per cubic yard, the figure shown in its shopping list working.

Why does the calculator add 10% extra gravel?

Gravel compacts down underfoot and spreads at the edges, so a delivered load covers a little less than the raw volume maths suggests. The calculator adds 10% first, then rounds bulk orders up to the nearest 0.5 ton.
